How Many Hours of Cleaning Does a House Need?

By Stone & Key · Published · Last updated

The honest answer to how many hours of cleaning a house needs is that it depends on the house. Bedroom count is only part of it: bathrooms, condition, clutter, who lives there and what you want done all change how long a clean takes.

Rather than quote averages we can't support, this guide explains the factors and gives clearly labelled examples to help you think about your own home. If you'd like it assessed for you, our domestic cleaning service agrees time and priorities home by home.

The short answer

There isn't a reliable "hours per bedroom" figure. Two homes with the same number of bedrooms can need very different amounts of time. The most accurate way to book the right length of clean is to describe your home and priorities to a provider and let them suggest a time, then review it after the first few visits.

What decides cleaning time

Number of bedrooms

More rooms means more to dust and vacuum, although lightly used spare rooms add little.

Number of bathrooms

Bathrooms are time-consuming per square metre. Each extra one adds noticeably.

Floor area

Larger rooms and open-plan spaces take more vacuuming and mopping.

Current condition

A home kept on top of regularly is much quicker to clean than one with built-up grime or limescale.

Number of occupants

More people means more use of kitchens and bathrooms between visits.

Children and pets

Both add floor and surface cleaning; pet hair can add significant vacuuming time.

Clutter

Surfaces covered in items take longer to clean, and tidying eats into cleaning time.

Cleaning frequency

Weekly visits are often shorter than fortnightly ones because less has built up — see weekly or fortnightly cleaning.

Requested tasks

Changing beds, cleaning inside appliances or ironing all add time. See what a regular cleaner does.

First clean vs regular clean

A first clean or deep clean brings the home up to standard and usually takes considerably longer than later visits, which maintain it.

Illustrative scenarios

These are examples to show how the factors combine. They are not guaranteed cleaning times, and we've deliberately not attached hours to them.

Why a quote should be based on your home

Booking too little time means jobs get skipped; booking too much means paying for time you don't need. A quote based on your actual home, household and priorities is the fairest starting point, and it's normal to adjust after the first few visits. Our guide to cleaner costs in Bristol explains how time translates into price.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a standard number of hours per bedroom?

No reliable one. Bathrooms, kitchens, condition, clutter and what you want done matter at least as much as bedroom count.

Why might the first clean take longer?

The first visit usually brings the home up to a standard; later visits maintain it. Some homes benefit from a deep clean before regular visits start.
